CHEWBACCA's STORY
It was late one Saturday night when we pulled in the driveway. We could
hear the cries of an animal but could barely see the reflection of his eyes.
We went closer to identify the animal as a very, young kitten. We decided
to leave him alone hoping that mom was near by in the yard. I fell asleep
in the living room chair but was awakened in the middle of the night by
the sound of a kitten crying. I walked outside only to find the kitten still in
the yard and whining like a baby. It was just too much to ignore, I took a
ride to the supermarket to get a large box. That was where Chewbacca,
AKA fur ball, lived for about a week till he was taken in by the DeHart
animal retreat. He commuted back and forth to work and was potty
trained (litter box) and bottle fed for a week.
That's my part of the story; animal shelter keeper Walt

Chewbacca came to live at Swampy Acres in September of 1997. He was
only approximately 5 weeks old when we brought him home. Chewie had
been at the office for three days, when I was asked if I was going to adopt
him. I had no idea there was a kitten in our Receiving area, so I trotted
down to meet this little ball of fluff! It was love at first sight. He was so tiny
and cute! Since I was going to be away the next weekend, Walt agreed to
care for him until Monday. Chewie was so young we had to bottlefeed
him, then wean him to moist kibble. I brought him home and Bear took
one look and fell in love! He and Chewie have been inseparable ever
since! It is quite amusing AND amazing to see this 90+ lb. dog be so very
gentle with this little kitten. Our other two cats, Squeaky and Bonnie, took
longer to accept him. He is now a very much loved member of our family.

boss right away!
Chewy was the star of our household
and felt every kitty should have a
rottweiler to lean on.

HAPPY KAT's STORY
Happy's original owner was an older lady, who
unfortunately died when he was only three months old.
She had gotten him from "The Cat Camp", a Kitty
rescue organization in New Jersey. When his owner
died, her niece was given money by the estate, ear
marked to keep Happy and his two older kitty friends
fed and happy until new homes could be found for
them. Instead of caring for the three cats, the niece
took the money and ran off with her boyfriend, leaving
each cat locked in a closet. After 10 days, neighbors
suspected something was amiss and called Animal
Control who arrived to find three starving kitties in the
closets. Andi, from "Cat Camp", got Happy back, but
thought he'd been through too much and decided not
to try to find him another home. Then we called in
November of 1997,  about getting Chewbacca a buddy
and Happy ended up here at Swampy Acres. He's a
good match for Chewy and, after the initial introduction
period, they are now best buddies. Happy-kat is two
months older than Chewy. The two kittens tag team
Bear, our rottweiler, and entice him into games of  tag.
Due to a really cruel twist of fate - Chewy and Happy-Kat went to Rainbow
Bridge within one week of each other in July, 2005
